As you may know, I’ve been playing with the idea of getting an iPad and have pretty much decided that I want one. But which one should I get? There are six to choose from. I narrowed it down to the highest capacity two of the six which means the 64GB wi-fi only version and the 64GB wi-fi + 3G version. The wi-fi version is of course much cheaper (by $100 or so) but you have to rely on wi-fi networks which aren’t always available wherever you happen to be. With the 3G version you have internet almost everywhere but it adds another monthly fee on top of your regular cell fee which isn’t an attractive option at all since I already pay for mobile internet access on my phone and don’t want to pay for it again for another device.
That’s where My Tether comes in. It’s an app for my Palm Pre that lets me share my Pre’s 3G internet connection over wi-fi. I installed it on my Pre and tested it by connecting my laptop and sure enough it works perfectly!! It’s surprisingly fast too! I highly recommend the app, it costs 15 bucks but it’s a one time donation and I can confirm that it does work on Canadian Palm Pre’s using the Bell network.
The install is pretty straightforward and it’s all explained on the install page although you will need access to a computer in order to do it.
For those of you keeping track this is a trick that an iPhone cannot do. I find it interesting that you can’t tether an iPhone to an iPad but you can tether a Palm Pre to an iPad (or anything else for that matter).
What I’m interested in finding out is how many devices the Pre can support as a wi-fi router. MiFi solutions can support up to 5 devices so I imagine it’s around that number but I don’t really plan on connecting more than one device anyway.
