A few weeks ago I started looking into getting a new camera. I only have a few requirements but it seems those requirements are too much to ask.
Here is what I need my new camera to do:
- Exposure Bracketing – at least 3 frames in at least 1/3 steps so I can do HDR
- Time lapse or the ability to use an intervalometer so I can make cool movies
- Ability to shoot in RAW
- A flash – dumb requirement but some cameras don’t have one
- A compact body – not necessarily point-and-shoot sized but definitely not DSLR sized.
I’ve looked at a lot of cameras and have even made feature comparison spreadsheets but have not found a single camera that meets all of these requirements so I’m asking the internet hive-mind for help. Does anyone know of a camera that can do these things that is for sale now? Please leave your suggestions in the comment section of this post.
So far the closest I’ve come to find the ‘one’ is the Samsung WB2000 (aka TL350). I’m given to understand that it does both bracketing and time lapse although I’m not sure of the exact specs on either function. Specifically I don’t know whether it does true bracketing or ‘onboard HDR’ which I’m not interested in. Also I don’t know what the ‘time lapse’ feature is like, is it only in certain configurations or can I choose between a variety of time lengths?
Cameras I’m not interested in:
- DSLRs – they’re simply too big and heavy, I’d never take them anywhere.
- Canon G12 or it’s twin, the Nikon P7000 – both are simply too big. I want a compact-sized camera with a decent lens.
Cameras that have potential:
So far the three I’m most interested in are:
- Panasonic DMC-LX5 (but time lapse ability?)
- Canon S95 (again, time lapse? maybe with CHDK?)
- and of course the Samsung WB2000 (bracketing and time lapse?)
Other cameras I’ve looked at:
- Olympus E-PL1, E-PL2, E-P2, XZ-1
- Sony NEX-3/5
- Canon SZ230 HS, S95
- Nikon S9100, P300
- Panasonic DMC-TS3, DMC-LX5, DMC-TS10, DMC-GF2
Anyone have any suggestions? Have I missed one?

Hi Mike - the following web site is great for camera reviews. The guy who runs the site also takes pictures with each camera of the same set of scenes so you can get a good idea of the sharpness of the photos taken by one camera vs. another: http://imaging-resource.com/ (click on Digital Camera reviews in the left margin of the web page)
I am looking at getting one of the following cameras: Nikon P300 (though no RAW), the soon to be released Canon ELPH 500 (no RAW), or the Canon S95.
