So…DSLR Then???

After many hours of fruitless research I have concluded that the camera of my dreams does not exist in the real world.  As a result I have switched my search to the DSLR market.

I have decided that my everyday point-and-shoot needs will be taken care of by the iPhone 5 (or 4G, whatever they plan on calling it) when that comes out and my real camera needs will be done by a proper DSLR.

With this in mind here are my requirements:

- Auto. exposure bracketing (for HDR shots)

- Time lapse or the ability to use an intervalometer (either wired or wireless)

- Ability to shoot in RAW

- Built-in flash

- Budget of around $1,000

As you can see the requirements stay pretty much the same as before although I have dropped the requirement for the camera to be compact and added a budget restriction because DSLR prices are out-of-control.

So far, my understanding is that Nikon’s include a built-in intervalometer with their DSLR line so I’ve narrowed it down to two possible Nikon candidates.  That said, I’m definitely open to suggestions so if there are any Canon fanboys (or fangirls) out there speak up and let me know if there’s a Canon camera I should look at.

The two Nikon’s that caught my eye are the D3100 and the D90.  In both cases I’m looking for a lens that will be a good all around lens for the majority of shooting situations. I’ve come to understand that an 18-105 mm or 18-200mm lens fits the bill but I could be wrong.

So far I’m looking at two packages, the D3100 with an 18-105mm lens for about $949.95:

And the D90 with an 18-105mm lens for $1099.00:

239303

I’m assuming that more money equals better camera somehow but I’m not sure.

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated!!

re lens - depends what your shooting situations are. I bought a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens for my Canon because I knew I'd be doing a lot of indoor shooting with the baby.

I bought a 50mm prime lens as well, for my Canon T1i. Can't beat prime lenses for sharpness - the difference compared to a zoom is significant. I would like to get a 35mm prime, because I have three kids and with a 50mm prime it can be hard to get them all in the shot when indoors with a 50mm.
